Boundary in Flux
2021
Video 5' 56"
During the pandemic in 2021, I produced a short documentary focused on the practice of "mowing" in a remote village called Ohara, deep in the mountains of Japan. This marginal village, now largely nonfunctional, is home to just one elderly resident. In the summer, weeds overgrow and engulf the man-made structures, prompting former residents and their descendants to return regularly to maintain the remaining buildings and graves through mowing. In a subtle way, the weeds themselves act as agents, sustaining the community by necessitating human intervention. At the same time, certain species among the weeds can only survive through these acts of mowing. Here, the relationship between humans and nature is not binary; both are active participants in sustaining this space, with their boundaries constantly intertwining and shifting. This documentary was created as a first step in my research on how to make this slow, imperceptible movement—one that cannot be fully captured on camera—visible.
In 2024, with the support of a grant, I was able to return to the village to continue this project. I am currently working on it in preparation for my solo exhibition at the Art Tower Mito, which opens this November.
